NPSL North Playoffs Review

Wednesday

The games were both punctuated by hydration breaks, with the temperatures in the 80s.

#2 Siouxland United FC 2-0 #4 Sioux Falls Thunder FC

The two sides split the regular season series with a win each, however the wins were not equal - a last kick win for Thunder having trailed in the 80th minute versus a 7-2 hammering by the Outlaws.

The home side broke through in the 10th minute as Dariel Contreras squared it for João Rocha to add to his healthy tally for the season. Thunder finished the half on the front foot, high pressure forcing a corner and a shot on goal, just wide but it remained 1-0 to the Outlaws at halftime.

It only took the hosts five minutes after the break to widen their lead, Contreras finishing off a box-to-box break with a 30 yard sprint to connect to a pass from Keitatsu Yoshida.

As the #2 seed in the North, Siouxland would need a Joy Athletic win to set up another home game. 430 miles Northeast, the Goats were threatening an upset.

#1 Duluth FC 2-3 #3 Joy AC

Duluth won one (rallying from 1-0 down to win 4-1) and drew one (which Joy should have won) in the regular season series. The home standing BlueGreens started the match on fire and were 2-0 up within 5 minutes with goals from Alex Ruiz and Liam Pritchard, but Griffin Price got one back for the visiting Goats in the 20th minute and it was there it stayed at half time.

In the 52nd minute, Goalie Alexandre Paredes and defender Juande mixed up for Duluth and a Phil Caputo cross found its way through to Christopher Plaza Alvarado for the equalizer. In the 66th minute, Joy broke free down the left and Carver Tierney dribbled deep into the box before slotting the ball into the far side netting for the go-ahead goal. Constant pressure from the home team founded on the shores of the Goat defense.

Saturday

NPSL North Conference Final - #2 Siouxland United FC 3-0 #3 Joy AC

As last year, it is only the winner of this match who can claim the title of Conference Champions. Duluth FC won last year and made it to the National Semifinals but this year saw a first time champion crowned.

Joy AC had the only real chance of the opening half an hour , but Siouxland keeper Will Devine smothered it. The Goats arguably had the better of the opening half but neither team had broken through at half time and the home side recovered their composure at half time and João Rocha added to his goal scoring streak with barely two minutes played in the second half, connecting to a breakaway pass to put the Outlaws ahead.

Outlaws head coach Alex Trent said the team "just needed a reminder to relax". The second half saw the home side gaining more control but still not able to completely put away the Goats until the 67th minute when Hayato Takayama latched on to a ball over the top of the Goat defense. Substitute Christian Piewe made it 3-0 after capitalising on a turnover by Joy in their own penalty area.

Reflecting on the season so far, Coach Trent said:

Happy for the club and everyone who has been part of it. Looking forward to a big challenge on Wednesday and more memories with this group.

Midwest Regional Playoffs

We look at the mini-tournament here

NPSL Round Up: Week 7-8

Wednesday June 25th

Joy Athletic Club 2-1 Minnesota Blizzard FC

An ill-tempered and scrappy game ends the playoff hopes of the visitors and solidifies Joy in third. Minneapolis's Dimitri Nair burst into the visitors' penalty area from the right. He passed the ball onto Eagan, MN's Phil Caputo, who slotted his 12th goal of a Golden Boot-caliber season into the opposite side netting with only 19 minutes played. However, Joy struggled all night to finish off Blizzard, and the visitors were level in the 41st minute when Ulsterman Jadon Morgan expertly volleyed a cross into the net at the far post, after a corner was only partially cleared.

On the hour mark, a give and go down the left released Hopkin's MN's Griffin Price, whose pass was side footed home by Buffalo, MN's Carver Tierney. Even despite a red card, for violent conduct, by the St Thomas Tommie Bennett Kouame (out of St. Louis Park, MN) in stoppage time, Blizzard were unable to rally again.

Saturday June 28th

Joy Athletic Club 1-4 Sioux Falls Thunder FC

Things looked rosy for Joy as Phil Caputo scored a free kick, 30 yards out and dead central. However, the visitors scored four unanswered to vault themselves into a playoff spot. Nick North seized on a pass through the Joy defense in the 40th minute. Four minutes later, Thunder had the lead, AJ Bowman curling it past the keeper into the bottom corner.

Luis Waeschle added a finish to an intricate sequence down the right and Nick North added a counter attack goal in the second half.

Minnesota Blizzard FC 0-2 Siouxland United FC

The Outlaws spent an hour scoreless but sealed a win with goals from Dariel Contreras Portorreal in the 62nd, and Sergio Mijangos in the 80th minute, with a solo run down the right and a blast into the side netting.

Iowa Demon Hawks 0-1 Duluth FC

JJ Oyebamiji caught his own rebound after a point blank stop to secure the full three points for Duluth.

Wednesday July 2nd

Duluth FC 3-2 Siouxland United FC

It took half an hour, but an interception in midfield set up João Rocha for the opener by the visiting Outlaws, curled beyond Schenk in the BlueGreen net. In the 65th minute, a handball in the box allowed Duluth FC an opportunity to equalize from the spot, and the penalty kick by Felipe Oliveira slid underneath the Siouxland keeper. In the 81st minute, Siouxland United failed to clear for a period of two minutes and the ball leaked out to Peter Pearson, who blasted home from the top of the box.  A late third by JJ Oyebamiji put the game beyond the reach of the visitors, even though United got their second in stoppage time through Sergio Mijangos.

Saturday July 5th

Siouxland United FC 1-2 Iowa Demon Hawks

With the seedings settled, Siouxland looked to stay healthy ahead of their rematch with Thunder. In the end it was the Demon Hawks who snuck the win. The visitors opened the scoring through an own goal in the 16th minute. Kyohei Eguchi equalized in the 31st minute but a Iowa PK by Jeanderson Pereira in the 70th secured the victory.

Coming Up:

The NPSL North Playoffs.

We look at the match-ups here

NPSL North Playoff Preview

#1 Duluth FC are the top seed despite a new head coach in Rio de Janeiro's Thomas Pazo. The perennial contenders for the North are defending Midwest Region champions and Liam Pritchard continues to torment opposing defenses. Felipe Oliveira and JJ Oyebamiji are their leading goalscorers, with 4 and 3 respectively.

#2 This is only Siouxland United's second season of existence, and following a 6-0-6 debut season, the Outlaws have been a surprise to everyone but themselves, beginning the season with two straight road losses but being unbeaten before losing to Duluth FC yesterday. Leading the way has been Rio de Janeiro's João Rocha, who has five goals, tied for second best in the conference. In the technical area is Alex Trent, who coached Dakota Fusion to an unbeaten regular season, before losing in the inaugural North Conference Final to Duluth FC. The Kansan has attracted a number of his players from 2024 to follow him to Sioux City.

We've overcome a lot of adversity as a group and we are in a great place now as a team with a strong bond together. We're learning how to win in different ways and winning has become the expectation. Our aim has always been getting home playoff games for our fans and club as we keep growing as a club in our second year and first year making playoffs.

- Alex Trent, Head Coach of Siouxland United FC

#3 The chance to be Siouxland United's opponents in the North Conference playoffs turned out to be a scrap between two wildly inconsistent teams, the Iowa Demon Hawks from Des Moines and the Sioux Falls Thunder. A new rule making it necessary for the matchups to be decided "on geography and/or other economic criteria" ensures that the teams from the South of the conference will meet each other.

Sioux Falls Thunder have a 4-1-5 record, with Aran Hernandez-Vivar having scored four and a rotating cast of others having added one to the record.

#4 Facing the BlueGreens in the Twin Ports are Joy Athletic, led by the Golden Boot nominee Philip Caputo, from Eagan, MN via Porto Alegre in the south of Brasil. He is the latest product of the Joy of the People "free play" system to make a name for himself in the NPSL, following Emmanuel Iwe (currently playing in the German 3.Liga) and Zinedine Kroeten (who is playing for Milwaukee Torrent in the Central States Conference). Buffalo, MN's Carver Tierney has ably assisted Caputo, to the tune of 5 goals.

I'll update this piece once I receive the quotes from the other clubs.

Coming Up - Wednesday

Duluth FC v Joy AC

Duluth won one (rallying from 1-0 down to win 4-1) and drew one (which Joy should have won) in the regular season series.

Siouxland United FC v Sioux Falls Thunder FC

The two sides have split the regular season series with a win each, however the wins were not equal - a last kick win for Thunder having trailed in the 80th minute versus a 7-2 hammering by the Outlaws.

Saturday

NPSL North Conference Final

As for last year, it is only the winner of this match who can claim the Conference Champions trophy. Duluth FC won last year and made it to the National Semifinals.

WPSL Wrap Up: Week 6

Wednesday

MN Bliss FC 1-0 Minnesota Dutch Lions

Ella O'Keefe out of Plymouth, MN was the difference maker as she tapped home a corner at the far post after an initial shot was a kick of fresh air. The result places Bliss fourth, equal with a St Croix team that had played two fewer games. Minnesota Dutch Lions, on the other hand, continue their search for their first win.

Friday

Joy Athletic Club 0-4 St Croix Legacy

A dominant midfield performance by the Legacy sees the team from Stillwater area pick off Joy defense with two offside-trap breaking passes around the corner and two late tap ins, totaling two each for Lake Elmo, MN's Amara Smith and two for Shoreview, MN's Tatum Trettel.

Manitou FC 1-4 Mankato United SC

Mandy Elton opened the scoring in the 7th minute but hers would be the only goal for the home side. Local product Ella Huettl, Albertville, MN's Harlee Peltz, Scotswoman Hannah Duncan and St Peter, MN's Grace Dlouhy returned fire for the road team.

Sunday

Mankato United SC 0-2 St Croix Legacy

The visitors took a half-time lead after a Bella Meier free kick from midfield bounced and skipped its way through traffic and over Tea Opitz into the goal. In the 57th minute, Hastings, MN's Meier doubled the team's lead with a sumptuous side foot curler from the edge of the box. Mankato had moments of possession but no penetration into the Legacy box.

Minnesota Dutch Lions 2-0 Manitou FC

The Dutch Lions secured their first win of the season at their last attempt, with well struck goals by Natalia Coury (out of Arizona) and Serene Hamzeh (out of Iowa City, IA).

Coming Up:

The first ever North Lakes Conference Championship, which we look at here.

WPSL Wrap Up: Week 5

Wednesday

Joy Athletic Club 0-3 Minnesota Thunder

Yet again, it took an hour before the visitors broke through. Still, a right-wing corner was skillfully flicked in at the near post by North Dakota State Bison Kendall Stadden. The second goal came only two minutes later as Minnesota Golden Gopher Paige Kalal tapped home after Concordia St. Paul's Sydney Potter parried a pile driver in the Joy goal. Kalal got a second five minutes later, blasting the ball past Potter from the top of the box after the Goats had repelled a spell of more intricate play.

Saturday

Minnesota Dutch Lions FC 1-1 Mankato United Soccer Club

Two stoppage time goals accounted for all the offense. Mankato United opened the scoring in the third minute of first half stoppage, through North Dakota State's Robyn Moody but their hard-fought win would be canceled out by a Dutch Lion equalizer in the third minute of second half stoppage, Idaho State Bengal Natalia Coury continuing a scarcely believable number of draws for the home team this season, this one being their fourth without a win.

Sunday

Minnesota Thunder 1-1 MN Bliss FC

Thankfully a short road trip for Bliss as they drove up to Eden Prairie for an indoor breakfast meeting with Thunder. The hosts explained to us why the game had been rescheduled:

Given the forecasted extreme heat conditions we decided to move the game indoors at Winter Park to provide a safer environment for players, staff and fans.  The earlier KO is a result of field availability.

With all that said, the match finished 1-1, North Dakota State's Loretta Wacek putting Bliss ahead in the 5th minute and Minnesota Golden Gopher Grace Estby equalizing only 5 minutes later.  Perhaps it was inevitable that after a couple of late-ish wins, Thunder would drop points somewhere along the line.

Salvo Soccer Club 3-0 Joy Athletic Club

Even in a league like WPSL where re-entry is unlimited, hydration breaks punctuated a night where the heat index went into the triple digits. An intricate goal in the first 10 minutes by South Dakota State Jackrabbit Katelyn Buelke was the only score going into half time, and it took until just short of the hour mark before Illinois State Redbird Maggie Dowling lifted a shot from the top of the area into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. Another blast into the top corner from the top of the box with the last kick of the game by Minnesota Golden Gopher Avery Petty completed the win and kept Salvo on top of the division.

Now they wait to see if St Croix can win both their games in hand and pip them to a playoff spot.

Manitou FC 2-5 St Croix Legacy

Two goals from Kenzie Jacobson (St. Thomas) and singles from Tatum Trettel (also a Tommie) , Brooke Nelson (South Dakota Coyotes) and Emma Johnson carried the Legacy to a win.

Upcoming:

Minnesota Thunder are done for the season, they may still win the Land of the Lakes Division but have opted out of the playoffs. Salvo have played their last regular season game and lead the clubs who have opted-in. However, St Croix have two games in hand on both. They cannot mathematically over take Thunder, but they would still beat Salvo to the playoff berth if they win both their remaining games. We are planning on being in Mankato on Sunday to see if that happens.

Wednesday

MN Bliss FC v Minnesota Dutch Lions

Friday

Joy Athletic Club v St Croix Legacy

Manitou FC v Mankato United SC

Sunday

Mankato United SC v St Croix Legacy

Minnesota Dutch Lions v Manitou FC

And then... the North Lakes Conference Final versus the top team in the Lake Michigan Division.

NPSL Round Up: Week 6

Tuesday

Joy Athletic Club 2-2 Duluth FC

Joy controlled the first half and got into a two-nil lead in the 32nd minute through a pair of goals by Carter Tierney, once from open play and once off a corner. However, they entered halftime level after a breakaway goal by the Londoner Jireh Oyebamji and a sloppy back pass capitalized upon by João Magalhaes with virtually the last kick of the half.

It was the division leaders who dominated the second half, including a penalty kick conceded and then tipped onto the post by Derek Stevens. A draw was probably a fair result.

Thursday

Siouxland United FC 7-2 Sioux Falls Thunder FC

Siouxland United entered the game with a chance to trim the gap to first to 1 point, whereas Thunder had the opportunity to overtake Joy in third. Both sides had good chances saved before the visitors took a lead in the 13th minute as a free kick 30 yards out was clipped early over the wall and into the penalty area for Aaron Hernandez-Vivar to slot home at the near post. The lead only lasted five minutes, João Rocha finished off a move from within the penalty area started by an Emilio Madrigal interception in midfield and fed to the Carioca by the Dominican Dariel Contrera, driving down the right. As the second half stoppage reached its conclusion of 2 minutes, Rocha was brought down on the right wing. The resultant free kick was sliced along the ground to Rocha, who blasted it into the side netting from the top of the penalty area.

The third goal for the Outlaws was the product of quick execution in the 54th minute, a rapidly taken throw from the left wing found Javier Munoz Cruz at the back post for a tap in. It was 4-1 ten minutes later, Kyohei Eguchi on a mazy run from 40 yards out on the left wing, all the way into the six yard box for a composed finish, beating six Thunder players in the process. Three minutes later, it was Rocha's hat trick, a simple finish off the rebound as Harumi Yunaiyama's shot cannoned into his path. The Outlaws had a shout for a penalty kick as Aimar Aramendia appeared to foul Christian Piewe Tientcheu. Piewe sprung the offside trap from a long ball curled into his path to make it 6-1. Nicolas Reinhard pulled one back 3 minutes later, but United made it 7 with the last kick of the game as Yunaiyama burst from midfield.

Saturday

Iowa Demon Hawks 3-0 Minnesota Blizzard FC

A hat trick by Robin Vandewalle gave the home team the win in this Summer time matchup of two teams who spend the winter in arena football. The first goal was a tap in after a neat pass around the corner in the 7th minute. The second goal came early in the second half and was all the Frenchman's creation and his special day was capped off in the 70th minute after he slid home easily from a left-wing cross.

Duluth FC 0-0 Sioux Falls Thunder FC (in Superior, WI)

A game with very few goal scoring chances leads to a highly unlikely, but firmly deserved, point for Thunder.

Standings

The tie-breakers are:

Head-to-head results, Goal difference in head-to-head matchups, Most wins in conference competition, Goal difference in conference competition, Fewest losses in conference competition.

Therefore, the Outlaws' 1-0 win over Duluth FC means they currently hold the tie-breaker atop the division. The two sides have still to meet in the Twin Ports. The next two teams will be seeded #3 and #4, but who plays whom will be defined by "geography and/or other economic factors", thus a Siouxland v Demon Hawks or Thunder match is much more likely than one for Duluth.

NPSL Round Up: Week 5

Wednesday

Minnesota Blizzard 1-0 Joy Athletic Club

Shannonsider Cian Mcgoey ran all night, frequently ending offside but also popping up on the hour mark as an outlet pass for Carter Hermanson, a former Mpls City Futures product out of St Paul, MN. Mcgoey calmly dispatched the chance and Blizzard collectively defended from midfield back as the division's hottest striker, Phil Caputo with 9, put them under severe pressure. There were at least 3 calls for a penalty kick for Joy turned away, although Mcgoey also could have earned one at the other end.

Saturday

Joy Athletic Club 1-2 Siouxland United

Siouxland United took the lead after half an hour, João Rocha with a clean half volley strike in at the near post after he chested down a recycled ball from a 35 yard free kick whipped in from the left wing. In stoppage time at the end of the first half, the Outlaws high press produced a second, blasted into the far side netting by Daniel Contreras Portorreal. The Goats were only able to spoil the clean sheet with a soft penalty kick award, the ball hammered at a Siouxland defender from close range for a handball. Nonetheless, Phil Caputo stepped up and scored his tenth goal of the campaign.

Iowa Demon Hawks 0-3 Sioux Falls Thunder FC

In the 13th minute, a tough sequence saw the visitors break the deadlock. Max Matthies chipped the ball past the advancing Demon Hawks keeper Luan Teles, who clattered into him - leaving the Thunder player on the ground but the ball in the net. The goal was awarded, a penalty kick (or caution) was not. The hosts were, however, reduced to ten men in the 63rd minute when Matheus Barbosa da Silva received his second yellow card.

A mis-hit clearance in the 69th minute left Aran Hernández Vivar to slide the ball home for Thunder's second. Luke Waeschle added the icing to the visitor's cake in the last ten minutes, softly cushioning a header back across the keeper from a right wing cross.

Minnesota Blizzard FC 1-2 Duluth FC

The BlueGreens scored all three of the game's goals, opening the scoring from the wrong end in the 13th minute as a corner bounced fortuitously off a defender. It took them 15 more minutes to level the match, Liam Pritchard picked up the ball in midfield, beat three defenders and wrong footed the Blizzard keeper by reversing to put the ball in at the near post. The Tees-sider scored his second, and the game's winning goal, in the early stages of the second half with another near post effort, this time playing off the shoulder of the left back and blasting it into the roof of the net.

Friday

Sioux Falls Thunder 0-2 Duluth FC

The undefeated BlueGreens took the win after goals from the 57th minute through the Mineiro Felipe Oliveira, who attends Wisconsin-Superior.  The game was put beyond doubt by half time substitute, Londoner Harvey McLoughlin (also attending Wisconsin-Superior) in stoppage time at the end of the second half.

Joy Athletic Club 3-0 Iowa Demon Hawks

Stop me if you've heard this before, St Cloud State standout Philip Caputo scored twice and Jessie Juarez added a third as Joy saw off early pressure and snagged goals in the 21st and 29th, with the third in the early going of the second half.

Saturday

Minnesota Blizzard FC 2-2 Iowa Demon Hawks

A counter attack down the right in the 12th minute by Evan Carlson to put the visitors on top, but only a minute later Owen Johnson was sent off for handling the ball outside his area. The subsequent free kick was whipped past the makeshift "goalkeeper" (and defender) Mauricio Groppo by Cian Mcgoey to level the score and that is how it would stand at half time.

Around the hour mark, it looked like Blizzard would join Demon Hawks, Thunder, Joy and Siouxland with at least 6 points in an almighty log-jam for playoff positioning, when J Morgan slotted home from an attack down their right. Instead, the ten men got up off the canvas and punched back only two mins later, Carlson blasting home his second from the top of the area.

Siouxland United 1-0 Duluth FC

Siouxland United provided a spark in second half stoppage time of a match otherwise dominated by box to box midfield action. A long throw from the right was flicked on by a Duluth defender, into the path of Sporting KC academy graduate (out of Kansas City, MO)  Abdulmuni Abdalla, who proceeded to take off his shirt in celebration and receive a second yellow card for delaying the restart. It is the second game in a row that the Outlaws have lost their discipline late, but they are now on a three game winning streak and have taken the first points of the season off the BlueGreens.

NPSL North kicks-off

Saturday May 10th

Sioux Falls Thunder 2-1 Siouxland United

Thunder left it late with goals from Sunao Midorikawa in the 82nd minute and Nick North in the 5th minute of second-half stoppage time to reverse the tide of a Siouxland derby which had seen the visitors go ahead in the 32nd minute through Harumi Yunaiyama.

Thursday May 15th

Duluth FC 3-1 Joy AC

Fresh from a National Semifinal, Duluth FC opened their league season at home against Joy Athletic Club, having already fallen in the US Open Cup to Forward Madison FC . An 8th minute cross from the right, headed back past the keeper from the left by Joy's Carver Tierney put the visitors ahead However, it was honors even at half time after sustained BlueGreen pressure told in the 37th minute, Teddy Miranda squaring from the right and Felipe Oliveira tapping it in from close range.

Early in the second half, Felipe Olivera picked it out from under his feet and slotted home from a Guerrero cross. In the 71st minute, Duluth FC played a searching diagonal ball to Liam Pritchard on the right, who crossed in for Caio Gomes to finish it and cap the win.

Saturday May 17th

Iowa Demon Hawks 2-1 Siouxland United

Guilherme Pereira scored twice for the Demon Hawks, opening the score from the penalty spot in the 16th minute and adding a goal from open play in the 26th minute. In what was a comfortable win for the home side, the Outlaws did get their own penalty goal from Takumi Sato in the 82nd minute but fall to 0-2 on the early season.

Minnesota Blizzard 3-0 Sioux Falls Thunder

This match was closer than the final score-line would indicate but it will go down in Blizzard history as the club's first outdoor win, following a disappointing debut season in NPSL. Jadon Morgan opened scoring in the 28th minute, tapping in from inside the 6 yard box after Cian Mcgoey burst down the left and crossed into his strike partner. Mcgoey himself made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute, lifting a free kick from inches outside the penalty arc over the outstretched Thunder keeper into the top corner of the net. He notched his second after a clearance from their own penalty area was allowed to skip unopposed to the Irishman, who finished from the edge of the Thunder area.

Blizzard now move to 1-0-0 on the NPSL season and Thunder drop to 1-0-1.

The North no longer, WPSL does the hokey-pokey

The clubs and structure for the 2025 WPSL season have been announced.

With the departure of Sioux Falls City and Dakota Fusion (at least for now), the WPSL has taken the opportunity to reorganize (what was) the Northern Conference.

The Northern Conference has steadily grown while remaining an outlier until the point where last season, 10 teams competed for 1 playoff spot. Instead, 2025 will see the debut of the North Lakes Conference. To make the new conference, the Lake Michigan division shifts over from the Midwest Conference, and the remaining teams from the Northern Conference make up the Land of Lakes division.

Come playoff time, the winners of the two divisions will play a Conference Championship for a single spot in the Central Playoffs.

The returning teams in the Land of Lakes division

Salvo SC, who play at University of Northwestern in Roseville, MN, finished second in the North last season and are perennial challengers for a playoff berth.

Prior to Sioux Falls City's emergence, Richfield-based Minnesota Thunder provided a duopoly with Salvo but have consistently declined a playoff spot as a matter of club policy.

Joy Athletic Club are the NPSL arm of the St. Paul-based "free play" non-profit, who have thus far not challenged for a playoff spot.

White Bear Lake's Manitou FC finished the season with one win.

MapleBrook Fury are now MN Bliss , as part of a partnership with the UPSL's Tonka Fusion Elite. Formerly challengers, they endured a 2-2-5 season.

The eastern border of the Twin Cities metro (and the Wisconsin border) brings Stillwater, MN based St Croix Legacy.

Outside of the Metro, there remains Mankato United (who were challengers in the era of Jenny Vetter, but no longer) and Minnesota Dutch Lions (who were previously Rochester United FC)

WPSL Spotlight: Minnesota Thunder v Joy Athletic Club

Joy Athletic Club

Spotlight Match: Minnesota Thunder 2-0 Joy Athletic Club

Last year’s national leading goalscorer Kaitlyn MacBean returned for another Summer and led Thunder past their neighbors, with tallies in the 13th (from Rilyn Rintoul) and the 90th (from half-time sub Ashley Thirk).

Other Results:

Joy Athletic Club 1-5 Salvo SC

Salvo’s Khyah Harper opened the scoring within 45 seconds, completing a high press with a curled effort past Mallorie Benhart in the Joy goal.  Harper added a second in the 19th minute, driving in towards goal from the right before shooting low into the goal. In the 22nd minute, Harper netted her hat trick, driving down the left wing before cutting inside and blasting another shot past Benhart. It was 4-0 in the 25th minute when a right wing corner was recycled to Emily Heslin for Kaitlyn Beulke to hammer a shot high into the net from the back post.

In a half with plenty of midfield action, an Emily Heslin free kick on the top of the box, drilled into the bottom left corner of the Goats’ net was the only goal until the last kick. With that last kick, Ari Vargas broke the Goats scoreless stretch, chipping Ayden Gagner in the Salvo net from 30 yards out.

NPSL Round Up: Week 1

Wednesday:

Duluth FC 3-0 Joy Athletic Club

Duluth FC's Charlie Wood had a couple of good chances with 5 mins on the clock, but the crosses in from the left were missed. Two corners back to back eventually resulted in an easy catch for the Joy keeper. Joy's best early chance was a turnover by Jamie Colvill in his area in the tenth minute. Limmer forced a save in the 12th minute. The breakthrough came in the twenty-fifth minute, as Liam Pritchard stole the ball in midfield and played in last season's club-leading goalscorer Tyler Limmer. The initial shot was stopped by the trailing foot of Joy's keeper Oscar Herrera but Limmer picked up the rebound. BlueGreens' Nathan Porter missed from point-blank in the thirty-third minute. Joy's Dinielsen Martinez received a straight red card in the forty-fifth minute for a confrontation with Colvill, who received a yellow card. Felipe Santos made it 2-0 on a penalty kick, after he himself was taken down in the eighty-third minute. Limmer scored his second, and Duluth's third, tapping in a pass from Manny Morales in the eighty-ninth minute.

Saturday:

Duluth FC 2-1 Siouxland United FC

Duluth FC win a wild one on a 65th minute winner from Myles Edmondson. Charlie Wood opened the scoring for the BlueGreens in the 47th minute but the visitors answered right back, their first ever goal, through Flynn Faulkner. In the 62nd minute, Rory Doyle was sent off, reducing the hosts to ten men, but the numerical disadvantage became a scoreboard advantage. SUX saw their own red card, to Hibiki Mizutani, in the 84th minute.

Dakota Fusion FC 4-0 Minnesota Blizzard FC

The brand new Blizzard, fresh from a narrow defeat in their opening game against TwinStars, met a Fusion side who have retooled under a new coach and the departure of league-leading goalscorer Yu Tsukanome to MLS Next Pro side Tacoma Defiance. It was the hosts who would have the bulk of possession and the most threatening chances.

Within the opening three minutes, Fusion had pinned Blizzard in their own half and the first chance came soon after, with Toshiki Makimoto on the front foot - a recurring theme in a busy game for the man from Hiroshima.

Blizzard's first chance came on a long free kick into the Fusion penalty area from midfield, eventually cleared for a goalkick after a scramble, but only a minute later, Alberto Romano Sanchez made it 1-0 Fusion from a Makimoto assist in the 12th minute.

Chances continued to come for the hosts as Blizzard defenders, and goalkeeper Shae Wirt, blocked the way to goal until the 27th minute, when Makimoto drove in from the left and Lucas Peruzo slotted home for 2-0. With more pressure from Fusion to finish the first half, it could have been a more emphatic scoreline if it weren't for shots over the crossbar and so the first half ended with the score only 2-0.

Four minutes after the break, Makimoto himself made it 3-0, with the Fusion high press forcing a turnover before he slotted it past Wirt from close range.

It was the 65th minute before Blizzard had a sustained period of possession, down their left, but they could not threaten the Fusion goal. The home side yet again threatened Wirt's goal in the 76th minute, but a curled shot rose just past the angle of post and bar. It would be academic as half time substitute Kairi Saito blasted one low past Wirt in the 78th minute for a 4-0 scoreline. There would be further shots on target but the game finished as a comfortable home win.

Mohamed Hammoud opened the scoring for the home side, finishing off a flowing team move with a shot from the top of the box in the seventh minute. Their lead was doubled in the 12th minute after Alexander Demorow headed home. Hammoud then put the match to bed in the 57th minute.

Cleveland SC 1-2 Michigan Rangers

Julian Pellegrini opened the scoring for the home side in the 7th minute but Rangers equalized through Daire O Riordan, chipping the ball off the near post and in with twenty-one minutes on the clock. Two minutes later, Chris Mendez of Michigan Rangers was dismissed for violent conduct.

Despite the man advantage, Cleveland were out-possessed by Rangers, who eventually broke through - with O'Riordan claiming his second goal of the game (and fourth of the season), slotting calmly home from the top of the box after a cross from the right wing.

Erie Commodores 1-3 Steel City FC

The home side broke the deadlock in stoppage time at the end of the first half, Connor Hartwell with a dipping free kick from just outside the penalty area into the bottom corner of the Steel City net. With substitute goalie Keaton Jennings making some key saves, the visitors equalized following a neat sequence of passing down the gut of the Commodore defense, finished off by Nathan Prex in the 75th minute.  Steel City then took the well-deserved lead in the 86th minute, when a free kick on the far right wing was recycled from the left, flicked on with one player's head before Eben McIntyre headed into the net.  McIntyre then made it a 3-1 game in second half stoppage time.

Saturday

Club Atletico St Louis 4-1 Iowa Raptors FC

CASL broke open the tie in the 7th minute, Xavier Brown scoring on the counter. They went up two in the thirtieth minute as Jake Karolczak drove inside and kissed the ball off the far post and in. The Raptors had a golden opportunity to score in the 40th minute, but a header from close in, was headed over. A left wing corner in the forty-second minute just went through to the Bluebirds keeper. The home side made it three as a counter down the left was volleyed ferociously in by August Harp in the 67th minute. Raptors got a goal from Jonah Dancer via the penalty spot after the Bluebirds keeper dwelled on the ball too long and had the ball stolen from him. The Bluebirds got another goal in the 76th minute after Harp juggled the ball in front of goal and eventually finished it off.

Ehtar Belleville 3-2 Des Moines United

The home team took the lead in a closely contested match in the twentieth minute, when Brandon Nyagurungo drove inside the box from the left wing and slotting home. Adam Knight made it two in the twenty-ninth minute, finishing from close range after a drive and curled pass from the left wing into his path. Ehtar then had a free kick close in on the left, but it was successfully cleared. DMU finished the half with their own spell of pressure, but two corners straight and a couple of counter attacks didn't climax in any goalmouth action. Ehtar extended their lead after the half, as a long, raking cross-field pass in the fifty-seventh minute released Triston Austin to slot past the onrushing goalie. The away side broke their shutout in the 66th minute with a tidy finish from ... off a left wing cross that was laid back into his path. DMU made it close, getting a close range second in the eighty-sixth minute after pressure down the right and ending the match tilting the field in their favor. However, Ehtar survived the pressure.

Duluth FC 6-0 Joy Athletic Club

The home side blitzed the goats in a five minute spell. Kostya Domaratskyy opened the scoring in the 25th minute, to open the scoring off a deep cross-field pass into the six yard box. Tom Akinola doubled the lead in the twenty-eighth, finishing off a bobbling ball. Akinola then added a third only a minute later. Stefan Roeb made it 4-0 in the thirty-fifth minute, tapping home after a goalmouth scramble from a corner. It was 5-0 in the 52nd minute, with Tyler Limmer putting the finishing touch on it. Limmer also scored in the 65th minute to make it 6-0, finishing off a neat pass through the offside trap.

Milwaukee Torrent 2-2 Sunflower State FC

Torrent opened the scoring in the 13th minute, Samuka Toure with a tidy finish through a crowded box after a corner. In the twentieth minute, a cross from the right went all the way through the area to Colin Innes on the left, who blasted it in at the near post to tie the game. A free kick from the right was driven in, with Sunflower taking the lead in the twenty-seventh minute,  Blake Barrick heading the ball in. Torrent equalized, Khedive Miguel Konde Gwo saw his effort rebound off the crossbar and Paco Piscaglia bundled it home in the 68th minute. Sunflower State had a chance to regain the lead from the penalty spot in the 74th minute as Sam Novak knocked over an attacker, but the PK was saved by Nick Chiappa in the Torrent net. A late red card for two yellow cards did not impact the result.

Minnesota TwinStars 2-0 Med City FC

TwinStars made the home crowd happy with a battling win over Med City. Neat play saw a defense splitting ball finished by Miguel Arellano. The clinching goal came in odd circumstances, with a free kick being awarded in mysterious circumstances. Nonetheless, the linesman was emphatic in flagging and Sidike Jabateh was equally emphatic in scoring a thunderous shot from right on the penalty D.

Sioux Falls Thunder 0-1 Dakota Fusion

Fusion broke the deadlock in the thirtieth minute, patient buildup followed by a ball across the six yard box, tapped home by Yu Tsukanome for his fourth goal of the season. Thunder had a strong chance in the 67th minute, with a free kick leading to a goalmouth scramble but they failed to finish the chance. The second half fluctuated but Thunder were unable to break back.

Sunday

Club Atletico St Louis 0-1 Des Moines United

Sora Noda was the difference as the team from Iowa notched another win.

Ehtar Belleville 3-5 Iowa Raptors

After an even opening 19 minutes, it was Raptors who struck first - a PK by Ombeni Mubake after a rash tackle on a Raptors forward on the left edge of the area. The lead was doubled by Derek Huffman only five minutes later, on the counter attack following an equalizer for Ehtar being waved off for offside.  The home side hit the post and then secured their own PK after handball. Triston Austin scored from the spot, just beating the dive of the Raptors keeper.

Huffman lifted a ball past the Ehtar goalie into the far corner from the top of the box just after play was resumed for the second half. John Edward Schwering brought the home team back to 3-2 in the fifty-fifth minute, sealing a finish after Brandon Nyagurungo made a searing run.  Jordan Webb scored after a corner in the sixty-fifth minute to make it 4-2. A neat passage of play from one wing to the other in the 80th minute climaxed with David Cole sliding in to make it 4-3, but the home side were never able to fully rally back and they conceded again in the 89th minute. Ronaldo Rojas headed home the final goal of a back and forth game.

FC Columbus 1-0 Erie Commodores

Ayoub Ouhammou was the difference after his cross from the right drifted in, over the goalkeeper and into the far side of the goal in the fifty-sixth minute.

Michigan Rangers 1-2 Steel City FC

Charlie Lawrence put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute and their lead was doubled by Nicky Kolarac ten minutes later. Rangers rallied to make it a one goal game after Tomas Echevarria scored in the fifty-third minute but the home side were unable to avoid the loss. On the other hand, Steel City move to the top of the division.

Wednesday

Duluth FC 1-0 Med City FC

Duluth's patient buildup came up against Med City's high press. The strongest effort on goal of the opening half hour was a snap shot from Kostya Domaratskyy just past the near post. Colin O'Mahony then had a good chance in the forty-second minute but that also went wide. Med City had a PK awarded and then waved off in the fifty-third minute. Up the other end, Duluth had their own penalty call ignored. The BlueGreens took the lead after Tyler Limmer drove a ball into the box in the sixty-third minute, headed home by Liam Pritchard.

Joy Athletic Club 2-0 Sioux Falls Thunder

Spencer Enright finished off a Joy move which saw the ball patiently moved from side to side and forward, although it took an interception in the penalty area and a header off an initial save for Enright to notch the first goal in the 19th minute. The home side put the game to bed in the seventy-second minute as ... finished off a neat interchange of passes via a deflection which wrong footed the Thunder goalie. The visitors had a route back into the game in the 77th minute, but a PK was saved by the diving Joy keeper.

NPSL Midwest Week 10: Recap

Wednesday:

FC Columbus 3 vs FC Indiana 0 : Roberts Field at The Wellington School, Columbus, OH - Eleven Sports

After a rough weekend which saw Columbus draw with FC Indiana then Carpathia win to knock FCC out of the playoffs, Columbus came back looking for vengeance. Amadou Dia broke open the match for Columbus in the 20th minute and Hamid Shariff added another just before the half time break. FCC added yet another when Chukwuemeka Eneli drilled home a PK in the 67th.

FC Milwaukee Torrent 5 vs Panathinaikos Chicago 0 : Hart Park, Wauwatosa, WI - Eleven Sports

The second midweek match effected by the Columbus and Carpathia matches from Saturday was another barn burner, and even more one sided. With a four point lead in the standings over Carpathia the Torrent could clinch the Great Lakes title with a win. And win they did with Malik Mennana earning a brace while Emiliano Caballero, Alexander Filian, and Byron Gutierrez each scored one in Milwaukee's route of PAO Chicago.

Duluth FC 6 vs La Crosse Aris FC 0 : Public Schools Stadium, Duluth, MN - Eleven Sports

A match that in all reality should be a route, was a route. Duluth FC dominated from start to finish in a match that saw the BlueGreens have five different goalscorers. Sidney Warden finished the match with a brace and is pushing hard for the league wide Golden Boot as he had 14 goals through 10 matches.

Joy Athletic Club 0 vs Med City FC 1 : Oriole Stadium, St Louis Park, MN - CCX Sports

Joy started the final week of their first season with their last home match of 2021 against Med City FC. While Joy Athletic has been snakebitten this season they have given most teams a good run for their money. Neither of those things changed as a 34th minute goal for Med City was all that was needed and all that was scored in SLP.

Sioux Falls Thunder FC 1 vs Dakota Fusion FC 3 : McEneaney Field, Sioux Falls, SD - Eleven Sports

Not a ton to say about this one, two teams towards the bottom of the division really just playing each other for the right of which Dakota is supreme. Last time out the Thunder wiped the floor with the Fusion 4-1 in Moorhead. This time out the roles were reversed as the away side Fusion dominated the scoreboard. Jack Pascoe scored two first half goals for the Fusion and Diego Valle added a third goal shortly into the second half. Sioux Falls did manage to keep the home side away from being shut out with David Bizimana's 82 minute goal.

Saturday:

FC Columbus 2 vs Carpathia FC 2 : Roberts Field at The Wellington School, Columbus, OH - No Announced Stream

This would be FC Columbus' swan song for the 2021 season as they hosted Carpathia FC at home. A week after getting knocked out of the playoffs for Columbus and days after Torrent secured the Great Lakes Championship there wasn't much on the line. Hamid Shariff scored first for Columbus before the match was deadlocked at 1-0 for the next 30 minutes. Owen Smith drew the match even in the 61st before teammate Ryan Williams put Carpathia ahead in the 73rd. Chukwuemeka Eneli drew the match even just three minutes later to have each team leave with a single point.

Minneapolis City SC 2 vs Joy Athletic Club 3 : Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis, MN - YouTube

Just two matches remained in the regular season for the Crows while the Goats would end their season in Minneapolis. MPLS City wanted to get one step closer to an unbeaten season while Joy only could disrupt that goal. Emmanuel Iwe opened the scoring after 50 minutes of play then former Crow, Whitney Browne added a second goal for the Goats in the 79th. Steevenson Lamarre brought the match back to a one goal difference with an 84th minute goal. Zinedine Kroeten pushed the lead back to two three minutes later. Luis Magana Cisneros scored one more for the home side before the final whistle to bring the scoreline back to one in what would be City's first loss of 2021.

Dakota Fusion FC 1 vs Duluth FC 2 : Jim Gotta Stadium, Moorhead, MN - Magnitude Sports Network

This meeting could have very well been a cakewalk for Duluth FC, Dakota Fusion did not let that happen in a must win match for the BlueGreens. James Westfield scored in the 4th and a half hour later Sidney Warden scored his 15th goal of the campaign for Duluth. Fusion's Aaron Pike got the home side on the board in the 75th minute for what by all accounts could have been a draw.

Sioux Falls Thunder 2 vs La Crosse Aris FC 2 : McEneaney Field, Sioux Falls, SD - Eleven Sports

Aris has a reputation for being a scrappy team that can steal points if you aren't careful. That's exactly what they did in Sioux Falls on Saturday night. While the Thunder got on the board early, just 9 minutes in, Aris answered back four minutes later. Damien Baltide's 65th minute goal for Aris gave them a lead but Tyler Limmer managed to score a late tying match for Sioux Falls to force a draw in what was close to being Aris first win of the year.

NPSL Midwest Week 9: Recap

Wednesday:

Carpathia FC 2 vs FC Columbus 3 : Avondale High School, Auburn Hills, MI - Eleven Sports

In a must win match FC Columbus surprised the home side by pulling out an upset victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. Carpathia took an early 1-0 lead but Columbus would tie it up a quarter-hour later. FCC held the lead the rest of the night scoring their second and third goals before Carpathia managed their second.

Duluth FC 1 vs Minneapolis City SC 6: Public Schools Stadium, Duluth, MN - Eleven Sports

Minneapolis City SC just needed a win to wrap up back to back to back NPSL North Championships, and a win did they get. It didn't look great initially as Duluth's Aidan Hill scored just two minutes in to give the BlueGreens the lead. Jack Berry tied up the match for the Crows inside the 20 minutes and it stayed that way for a while. However after receiving two yellow cards Aidan Hill was sent off in the 53rd minute, which allowed City to blow the doors off the match. The Crows scored 5 unanswered goals starting in the 60th minute en route to a 6-1 win and their third straight North title.

La Crosse Aris vs Med City FC: 7 PM - Arcadia High School Stadium, Arcadia, WI - No Announced Stream

Sioux Falls Thunder 3 vs Joy Athletic Club 3 : 7 PM - McEneaney Field, Sioux Falls, SD - Eleven Sports

Both teams have had their highs and lows through what has been a rough year for both the returning Thunder and expansion Goats. The season wouldn't really get any better or any worse for either side as Sioux Falls and Joy Athletic drew at three all in Sioux Falls.

Saturday:

FC Indiana 2 vs FC Columbus 2 : Legacy Sports Club Stadium, Lafayette, IN - Facebook

Another must win match to either keep the playoff hopes alive or possibly improve them pending the result of the evening match between Carpathia and FC Indiana. Ricardo John scored first for the Lions and was shortly followed up by Sean Bonval getting the Lions their second goal. Michael Chilton drew the game within one with a 61' goal for FCC. FC indiana knocked in an own goal just minutes later in what proved to be the final goal of the match.

Carpathia FC 4 vs FC Milwaukee Torrent 0 : Adams High School, Rochester Hills, MI - Eleven Sports

After the FC Indiana/FC Columbus result from earlier in the day, Carpathia just needed a win to punch their ticket to the Region Playoffs. Not only did Carpathia win but they dominated the Torrent. Ryan Williams scored first for Carpathia in the 13th, Owen Smith would knot a brace on back to back goals, and Charles Braithwaite wrapped up the match with Carpathia's fourth goal of the night.
